Representative Jan Jones certainly made herself known as a freshman legislator, and already shows signs of doing the same in her second term. During both the first and second sessions of her freshman term, she authored and passed legislation. She has already been appointed Vice Chair of the Education Subcommittee of Appropriations. She will also serve as Secretary of the Reapportionment Committee and is a member of the Environment and Natural Resources and Education Committees as well.

Chairman Jones has worked relentlessly to fight for better educational standards and practices. In fact, the School State Superintendent personally recognized her for her leadership and her effectiveness on educational issues last year. Representative Jones was invited to join the Superintendent and her staff on a British government sponsored trip to London where they discussed the educational funding and practices. Her work on the 2004 Education Amendment assuring the third grade retention policy was a major Republican victory. She continues to support and lobby for the state’s Hope Grant Scholarship Program.

This term will mark the second time that Representative Jones has served on the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee. During her last term in office, she was the only freshman legislator to be appointed by the Governor to the Land Conservation Partnership, a major policy council. She played a crucial role in the formation of the Northern Arc Greenway Trail, an organization focused on trying to develop the area that had once been selected for the proposed Northern Arc. Chairman Natural Resources & Environment

HD 70 (R - Newnan)

Representative Lynn Smith is no stranger to public office! Prior to her being elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1997, she served her area’s constituents in several other ways. Her community and civil service background includes the role of chairman for the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce; the Newnan Carnegie Library; the Coweta Economic Development Partnership; and the Shenandoah Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center. She also served as the president of both the Newnan Junior Service League and the Driftwood Garden Club.

Presently, Lynn is serving as the chairman to the Natural Resources and Environment Committee. Her extensive involvement in authoring the 2003-2004 Georgia Water Management Plan and service on the Statewide Water Study Committee work to support her appointment. In earlier sessions, she successfully sought for changes to the Environmental Protection Act concerning air quality. Chairman Smith is also serving on the State Planning and Community Affairs, Appropriations and the Government Affairs Committees.

In 2004 Chairman Smith was elected as 1 of the 13 board members of the Executive Board of Women’s Legislative Network of the National Conference of the State Legislature. During that same year, she received the Trailblazer Award from African American Alliance of Coweta County for her efforts in building community relationships. She and her husband Charles have been blessed with 2 daughters and a grandson. The couple met at University of Georgia and currently own and operate Murray Printing Company, which the representative managed for several years. She also taught French and Social Studies in Newnan schools on and off for about 5 years. While her daughters were in grade school, she would often volunteer to teach different classes French lessons from time to time.

Aside from being an accomplished legislator, mother, business owner and teacher, Representative Smith is quite the gardener. The self-taken photographs in her office display the brilliance and vibrancy of flowers that she has cultivated over the years. It’s quite an impressive display
