Budget Control Act of 2011 --  D.C. Vote

8/2/11 - U.S. House of Representatives voted 269-161 in favor of passing the Budget Control Act of 2011. The bigger story, however, was the divide among both the Republican and Democratic caucus’ in the House. Republicans approved the measure by a 174-66 margin, while the Democrats were evenly split at 95 in favor of the legislation and 95 opposed. For the final House Roll Call, click here.
How they voted: In Georgia, the numbers tell a different story. GAGOP Representatives Broun, Gingrey, Graves, Kingston, Scott and Westmoreland all voted against the measure, while Representatives Price and Woodall voted in favor. Four of Georgia’s Democratic Reps. voted for the bill, while John Lewis broke-step with his colleagues and voted against the legislation. In the Senate Chambliss voted NO and Isakson voted YES. (Yes, Chambliss comes up for re-election before Isakson. ;- )

Redistricting  - The Georgia General Assembly will reconvene on August 15th for a special session to address legislative and congressional redistricting. Unlike when the Democrats controlled the process a decade ago, Georgia’s Republican leadership is working tirelessly to draw fair, equal maps that look past party politics and towards meeting our constitutional mandate of “one person, one vote” for all Georgians. -- GA GOP

The message should be;
If you can take a vacation day from work, please do so that our numbers outweigh theirs.  We have the momentum and it's time to show it.

Call To Action by State Party Chair, Mike Berlon

Dear County Chairs, CD Chairs and State Committee of the DPG,
As you know, I deeply appreciate the confidence that you have entrusted to me. We’re doing big things at the DPG, and I’m asking for your assistance with an urgent matter.
On Monday, August 15 at 9am, the Democratic Party of Georgia will be partnering with several affiliate organizations for the Hope & Unity Rally at the Georgia Capitol. This call-to-action will unite Georgians that have been sidelined by our state’s republican legislation: policies that are against public education, against workers and anti-middle class.  It’s imperative to have a good turnout for this event.
I am asking each of you- committed members to our Democratic ideals- to do your part in pushing this event through emails and facebook. We hope for your attendance, but just as importantly, we hope for your promotional help.
The website for our event is www.HopeAndUnityRally.com.
I ask for the following.
·         Please forward this website to your County Committees, friends and family, and encourage them to circulate amongst their friends and personal networks.
·         If you are on facebook, please post the link on your facebook wall.
The DPG will do additional promotion of the Hope & Unity Rally, but much of it begins with a strong showing on facebook and other social networks.
If you have any questions or suggestions on how to promote this event through free or low-cost means, please reach out to our Communications Director, Eric Gray.
Thanks for all that you do,
Mike Berlon
Chairman
Democratic Party of Georgia
